MUSIC IN ITALY (ITALIAN MUSIC)

Of course, there is plenty of good music in the land of Vivaldi, Verdi, Puccini, Bellini, Rossini and Mascagni. Operas are at their best during the winter season at Naples' San Carlo, at  Rome's Teatro dell'Opera, Palermo's Teatro Massimo, Venice's La Fenice (unfortunately destroyed in Feb. 1996 by fire), the Comunale in Florence and at the famous La Scala in Milan. In Rome there are open-air operas in July and August situated or at the Olympic stadium or nearly sure from Summer 2001 back in the matchless setting of the Baths of Caracalla. Surely the best summer Opera season is performed in the impressive amphitheatre of Verona, an unforgettable experience not to be missed from end of June until beginning of September.

Of special interest are the Musical May in Florence, the Festival of Two Worlds in the Umbrian town of Spoleto (July) and the international Music Festival in Venice (September). Good concerts take place almost everywhere, all year round.
