VENEDİK YAHUDİ GHETTOSU TURU
YARIM GÜN (SABAH) - CUMARTESİ HARİÇ HERGÜN
Meet with a local authonzed expert guide of the Ghetto and begin a walking tour through the borough of Cannaregio and the Jewish Ghetto, visit the Jewish Museum and three synagogues. This extremely interesting tour will give you the chance to enjoy the beauty of a little known area of Venice, where the Jewish Community was restricted to live in 1516. In certain documents dating from the early centuries of the Christian era, there is already evidence of the presence of Jews in the Venetian Republic territories; these were Jews from the Orient and from the countries beyond the Alps and, after
1492, those driven from Spain and Portugal.
They settled first on the mainland in small communites, then came to VenIce, the great center of trade between the Occident and the Orient. With their residence permits sometimes granted and sometimes revoked, the Jews slowly managed to form a nucleus of considerable size and importance within the life of the city. She government of the Republic then declared that all Jews should live in a single zone and chose, by a decree of March 29, 1516, the square in the parish of Saint Jerome, which would be called the "Ghetto Nuovo". or New Ghetto. Thus was born Europe's first "ghetto", which is still a thriving district of the city where the Jewish religious and administrative InstItutIons are located
and two synagogues are still open for worship.
According to tradItIon, the name "ghetto" is derived from the Venetian word "geto", meaning foundry, which was pronunced with a hard "g" by the German Jews who first settled there. The first zone assigned to the Jews was called "Ghetto Nuovo" because there was a new foundry there; "Chetto Vecchio", named for the old foundry was the second zone granted to the Jews, after 1541; finally, "Ghetto Novissimo" was the area given in 1633.
